Comedy and theatre will be the focus for a new virtual workshop directed towards teens from Northern Saskatchewan.
The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Circle of Voices North program is being coordinated by actor, comedians Dakota Ray Hebert and Dylan Jay Williamson. Hebert says the goal is to engage Indigenous youth between the ages of 13-18. She says they hope to build confidence in performing art abilities and capabilities of participants, to light a spark in them for theatre, performing and writing. The 3 month course, will teach students how to build a stand up routine, the fundamentals of being on stage and writing sketch comedy.
Hebert hopes to inspire teens from northern Saskatchewan to pursue a career in the arts. Hebert, is from Meadow Lake, is part of English River First Nation and has family in Beauval. She has a show on APTN, has toured in theatre and in comedy across North America and the world. Hebert says she had lots of people in the arts who believed in her along the way and hopes to give back in the same sense.
