If approved by Regina City Council, a motion passed today (Wed) by its Executive Committee would outline guidelines for sponsorship, naming rights and advertising policies for city operations, but Premier Scott Moe is speaking out against one of them.
Businesses that sell or produce tobacco, cannabis or that discriminate in some way are on the restricted list but the sticking point for the Premier is to ban fossil fuel producers and sellers from advertising or sponsorship agreements.
He suggests that if this motion passes at the next Regina City Council meeting, his government will seriously consider the future of sponsorships to Regina from provincial energy companies like SaskEnergy and SaskPower.
Moe reminds the City of Regina that it receives about $29-million a year from the municipal surcharge on SaskPower bills and $4.3-million from SaskEnergy bills, and notes that if Councillors have a strong aversion to accepting money from energy companies, he will assume they no longer want to receive these funds which would then be distributed elsewhere.
