In light of a recent carbon monoxide incident in Saskatoon, SaskEnergy, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, and SaskPower are reminding residents of the importance of CO safety awareness.
CO is a colourless, tasteless, odourless, and poisonous gas that can have deadly effects. Low exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms; continued exposure to high levels leads to unconsciousness, convulsions, brain damage, and can be fatal.
Last week, about 50 people from an apartment building in Saskatoon had to be evacuated when Carbon Monoxide levels were detected at over 400 parts per million. Evacuations are called for when the level reaches 50 parts per million.
Last fall, SaskEnergy partnered with retailers across Saskatchewan to offer a $10 rebate on the purchase of Carbon Monoxide alarms. The point of sale rebate expires on January 31st.
Important steps in the defense against CO poisoning include:
Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected by a licensed contractor every year;
Conduct regular inspections of your chimneys and vents to ensure they are clear of debris or ice/snow buildup; and ensure you have working CO alarms in your home to alert you to danger before the physical symptoms of CO poisoning appear.
Keep an eye out for signs of CO buildup in your home and go here for important safety information.
