The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says accepting Payette’s resignation isn’t enough. It says taxpayers are still on the hook for her expenses.
The organization says, Payette has been no friend to taxpayers. The CTF says she racked up $65,000 in flights, meals, and other expenses in her first year-and-a-half in office – more than fifty times more than her predecessor spent in the same time span. The CTF says she also spent just over $649,000 on her swearing-in ceremony; the flowers alone costing $3,000.
But the federation says, the fact she’s left office doesn’t mean taxpayers are done paying her expenses. It says, that’s because there’s a policy still in place that has allowed former governors general, like Adrienne Clarkson to, as the CTF describes it, soak taxpayers for over $1.1 million with zero transparency – after they leave office!
The federation has a petition calling on the Prime Minister to put an end to the policy.
