Tuesday marks the first day for the Saskatchewan Environmental Society’s “Sustainability Speakers Series” webinars, with a focus on the climate crisis.
The first webinar is Tuesday Evening and will feature Margret Asmuss, a Sustainability Officer with the University of Saskatchewan.
Asmuss says she will be talking about the human cost of climate change, including wildfires in Australia last year, and how we rarely think of these events in terms of the cost on individuals. Closer to home with some fire and drought events experienced in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Asmuss says this isn’t just a big picture issue, it’s having an impact on people’s livelihoods and lives.
Asmuss says she’ll also be speaking about how climate change is contributing to global human migration. She explains in places like Syria and Central America, we don’t tend to think of the mass movements of people in terms of where they are coming from and in terms of their ability to find food. Asmuss explains you have people coming out of areas that are politically unstable, and when you layer in food in-security as they start moving, it creates tragedy at the individual level and political issues wherever they move.
Asmuss says the webinar will also have an update from USask’s Pablo Rodriguez regarding climate action in Saskatchewan.
The webinar starts at 7 p.m. and will include a Q & A session, it is hosted by the Saskatoon Library and SES.
