The Saskatoon Fire Department says a 911 call came in at 2:15 a.m. from the nursing staff at Sherbrooke Community Centre on Acadia Drive reporting a haze of smoke on the main level of the facility.
Crews encountered very light smoke when they entered the building and a search for the source led them to the garbage room where they found a fire inside a large metal dumpster.
The dumpster was rolled out of the building and safely extinguished. None of Sherbrooke’s residents or staff were evacuated and fire crews set up large fans to remove any lingering smoke. No one was injured.
While the fire investigator confirms the fire began in the enclosed dumpster, the exact cause is still under investigation.
