City councillors are raising concerns that neighbourhoods are growing without the proper infrastructure to provide city transit services.
A report at the Transportation Committee meeting was heard regarding the process for introducing or expanding transit within new and developing neighbourhoods.
Councillor David Kirton says it would be frustrating for a resident to hear that a neighbourhood has reached a threshold for service and still not seeing that service due to a lack of infrastructure. He says many people who are moving into newer neighbourhoods are moving in with children, and the neighbourhoods don’t have schools. Kirton suggests this makes buses more important in some way for new neighbourhoods, than established ones. Kirton explains it is confusing to see a neighbourhood like Kensington, which he says is 40% sold, with no real bus service throughout the area.
Councillor Hilary Gough motioned for enhanced reporting around transit service levels be included in reporting to the transportation committee, including predictability for new neighbourhood services.
A report regarding the vehicle for hire bylaw, that regulates taxis and ride sharing companies, “falls short” according to the owner of Saskatoon’s Riide Transportation.
Kelly Frie spoke at this week’s Transportation committee meeting and says the process seemed extremely flawed.
Frie asked if that was the only attempt to level the playing field going forward, he thinks the report should be sent back to city administration.
Out of 11 proposed options for changes to Transportation Network Companies, like Uber, only one was recommended by city administration . That recommendation would see the maximum age of a taxi upped from 7 years to 10, putting cabs in line with TNC regulations.
Other options that were not recommended included things like putting a cap on the number of ride sharing vehicles on the roads in Saskatoon, requiring cameras in vehicles, requiring a municipal license, restricting dynamic pricing and requiring Ubers to accept cash.
