The Government of Saskatchewan is urging the federal Minister of Transport to reverse layoff notices issued to air traffic controllers in Regina. As well, they are requesting the Regina International Airport be excluded from any review of air traffic control. The ministry of Highways is not aware of any similar review of air traffic control in Saskatoon.
Premier Scott Moe says the federal government needs to reverse its decision to lay off air traffic controllers at Regina International Airport and hit pause on any consideration of closing the control tower at Regina’s airport.
Moe says Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw has written to the federal minister requesting the decision be reversed. The Premier, in a series of tweets, goes on to say that now is not the time to make a decision like this. He says he realizes the number of flights in and out of Regina are greatly reduced but it will change when the pandemic subsides and the Regina airport will be an important part of Regina’s and Saskatchewan’s economic recovery.
