Saskatchewan’s separate Habitat for Humanity organizations have now amalgamated to become one provincial body. The organizations in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Regina and their chapters in Yorkton, Estevan, Moose Jaw, Melfort and North Battleford are now known as Habitat Saskatchewan.
The inaugural Board Chair, Bruce Anderson, says the merger aligns with the mission to bring together the collective strengths of each organization. The operational structure will standardize the work at all of the offices, creating efficiencies in IT and finance, Habitat ReStore operations, construction and fundraising. There have been four staff layoffs, all in Saskatoon. Anderson says moving to a provincial model is not unique. Habitat organizations in Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba have merged in each of their provinces.
Both Saskatoon and Prince Albert will continue to have administrative offices, but head office will be in Regina. The ReStore operations will remain in each city but all under one director.
Conexus Credit Union has pledged $1-million to build 80 homes across the province over four years. This year, Habitat Saskatchewan will have 31 homes under construction and over the course of the year, 21 families will be moving into their new homes. The other ten families will move in next year.
