According to multiple reports the US Senate has voted 57-43 to acquit former President Donald Trump on Saturday, after he was charged with inciting the January 6th attack on the US Capitol building.
Seven Republican senators joined Democrats in voting the former president as guilty, but the vote was short of the two-thirds necessary for conviction.
Trump released a statement welcoming the decision, saying his movement “has only just begun.”
The seven Republican senators who voted to convict were Richard Burr of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
This was the first time a U.S. president has faced being impeached twice, the first Senate impeachment trial of a former president and the shortest impeachment trial in U.S. history. Trump becomes the first president to be acquitted by the Senate twice.
