The Governance and Priorities Committee, which consists of all Saskatoon City Councilors, has unanimously approved a proposal for an outdoor festival site in Saskatoon.
The work towards an outdoor festival site in Saskatoon was presented to the Governance and Priorities Committee with the final report being forwarded to City Council and the concept plan being approved.
Administration is to report back on options to expand community engagement to include homeowners in the downtown area who live near Friendship Park and to include input from Indigenous organizations.
The proposed permanent site called River Central is from the edge of River Landing and heading east through to the Vimy Memorial and on to the Bessborough Hotel.
Councillor Troy Davies says the history of this site goes back to a time when there were discussions about not having A Taste of Saskatchewan in the downtown area because of how detrimental large events are to the natural surroundings.
He likes the idea of this site having the infrastructure to hold outdoor concerts of up to 7,500 people as opposed to the approximately 3,000 people for concerts right now at Bess Gardens.
The Committee also recommended a supply chain management tender for Phase 1.
The first phase of the proposed permanent site would be funded with $2-million from the Municipal Economic Enhancement Project from the province.
