A roadmap of potential changes to speed limits in Saskatoon will be brought to city council’s Transportation Committee Monday.
City administration reports vehicle speeds on residential streets and pedestrian safety where the top concerns for residents during recent neighbourhood traffic reviews, and now admin want to get more public feedback online, in a review of speed limits.
The public engagement portion of the review will look at a few key areas. Administration is looking for feedback on potentially reducing speed limits in residential areas to 40 km/h or even 30 km/h. Admin will also ask about possible changes to speed limits in school zones, playground zones and areas with a higher number of seniors.
With the committee’s approval the review will move online Tuesday until April 30th, telephone surveys will also be done with a random sampling method. With feedback collected, more reports and decisions will occur over the course of the year, with any potential changes estimated to be implemented sometime in 2022.
Jay Magus, Director of Transportation says road safety is a shared responsibility and many cities across Canada and the world have successfully implemented reduced speed limits in their jurisdictions. He says before making any changes, city administration wants to inform, educate and get meaningful feedback from citizens.
