The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is demanding the province stop the sale of Crown lands, saying the Saskatchewan government has not lived up to its legal obligations.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says the lands and water affects those who want to exercise their inherent and Treaty right to hunt, fish, trap and gather.
He says these are constitutionally protected rights and selling these lands also affects the First Nations trying to fulfill Treaty Land Entitlement and Specific Claims settlement agreements.
Cameron suggests that since 2008, Saskatchewan has been selling Crown land through public sales without property engagement with First Nations and in 2017 the province expanded its sales to online auctions, which has meant selling large tracts of land despite the objects of First Nations.
He explains that First Nations communities with Treaty Land Entitlement or Specific Claim settlement agreements often buy Crown lands to fulfill these agreements.
