The city of Saskatoon has voted to maintain the current non-residential to residential tax ratio of 1.59 to 1 for the 2021 tax year.
The tax ratio is set to distribute property tax across different property classes. In Saskatoon’s case the tax rate for non residential properties is at some point higher than residential properties. In 2020 this rate was 1.59 to 1 and that number was last decreased in 2017 when the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce lobbied to get it down from 1.75 to 1.
Chamber of Commerce CEO Jason Aebig thanked city council for their leadership at what called a critical time for Saskatoon businesses. He says economic recovery is on the horizon and the business community is ready to lead the way. Aebig adds after a year of uncertainty, the community is eager to work together to help recover the jobs, incomes and growth COVID-19 took from us.
Options proposed to council ranged from lowering the rate to 1.3 to raising it as high as 2.15 City Council voted unanimously in favour of maintaining the current property tax ratio.
