Regina City Council has decided that the City will be moving the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald out of Victoria Park and into temporary storage. The motion to move the statue of Canada’s father of confederation and first prime minister passed 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

The statue has been a hot button topic since last year when Macdonald’s role in the implementation of Residential Schools was brought forward by marginalized groups.  Regina Mayor Sandra Masters says she wants it to be clear they are not trying to erase history.

She says while it hasn’t been decided where the new home of the statue will be, it will only sit in storage for a maximum of one year at which time it will be re-homed and there will be a plaque depicting Macdonald’s full legacy, including his involvement with residential schools and Indigenous segregation.
