Prince Albert City Council is considering a $35 base tax to support the Police Service, meaning the ability to fund four new officers.  Mayor Greg Dionne explains that the $35 tax would be applied equally to every door in Prince Albert, whether residential, multi-residential or commercial.

Dionne says the population of Prince Albert is around 36,000, but as a regional service centre for Central and Northern Saskatchewan, the population it services is often much higher . The Police Service reports that more than 30 per cent of police interactions are with people not from the city.

A news release from the City of Prince Albert states that its police service regularly responds to a much higher than average number of calls for service when measured against other similar-sized police agencies in Saskatchewan and across the country. Last year, officers responded to more than 40,000 calls, an increase of just over 11 per cent from the previous year. City Council will consider the base tax at Monday’s meeting.
