With a twist on the slogan, “New York is big, but this is Biggar”, the Town’s new fundraising motto is “New York is big, but our future is Biggar”. The Town has launched a $5-million fundraising campaign for a Main Street revitalization project which includes a park with market area, festival stage and historic garden.
Mayor Jim Rickwood says this project began a few years ago when two former Biggar residents, Ina (eye nah) Lou and Wayne Brownlee approached the Town about finding meaningful ways to give back.
The campaign begins with a pledge from the Brownlees to match all donations up to $2.5-million through their family foundation.
Wayne Brownlee retired as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Nutrien in 2018.
Rickwood notes in Biggar’s past, Main Street was a hub of social activity and civic pride, but as society has changed its pathways, he suggests its time to transform Main Street. He hopes this can be a success story and roadmap to re-establish small towns as vibrant, friendly and dynamic places to live and do business.
