Students from across the country will tackle science, technology, engineering and math problems and experiments during this year’s virtual STEM fairs.

21 regional science fairs will be co-hosted by Youth Science Canada and Executive Director Reni Barlow says it’s all about giving students the experience of a scientist or engineer.  He says when students actually get to experience that, with questions and problems that matter to them, it can be a pretty addictive.

Barlow says projects generally fall into two categories, discovery projects that are scientific investigations, or innovation projects where students have identified a problem and try to develop a solution.

Students in grades seven to twelve who live in Northern, Northwest and South East Saskatchewan can still enter for the virtual fair that begins on Monday.  These are all regions where fairs weren’t held due to the pandemic.

Barlow says it’s a chance to showcase projects with STEM professionals who act as judges but also will offer guidance and support. Top projects will participate in the virtual Canada-Wide Science Fair in May.
