The Canadian Taxpayers Federation would have liked to have seen Prime Minister Justin Trudeau address overspending in previous budgets and not introduce costly new programs during the 2021 budget.

CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano is calling the 2021 Federal Budget a reckless plan that permanently increases federal spending for years to come.  Terrazzano suggests the vast majority of measures in the budget have nothing to do with pandemic support.  He calls it a debt fueled spending binge that will see the federal government increase spending by nearly 30 percent by 2026. He says this will be an increase of more than $100-billion with no plan on how to pay for it.

One of the focuses of the budget is a $30-billion government daycare program, Terrazzano says Canada couldn’t afford this before COVID-19 and it certainly can’t afford that type of costly government program now, with more than a trillion dollars of national debt.

Terrazzano says Trudeau promised not raise taxes but explains the 2021 budget includes a raft of new taxes and tax hikes.  Including higher tobacco taxes, a vaping tax, sales taxes for digital services and a luxury goods tax.  Terrazzano explains the CTF would have liked to see a taxpayer friendly way to get the economy going again.  Terrazzano suggests taxes should have been reduced for tax payers and businesses to get more people back to work and more entrepreneurs in the market.
