The Saskatoon Fire Department has closed 16 suites at 1416 20th Street West because of unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The notice took effect at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Fire Chief Morgan Hackl says, “Up until now, we have been able to remedy the life safety issues in the building.” But, he says, “Following repeated inspections, orders to remedy issues, and tickets, the conditions in a number of suites have degraded to such an extreme state the Fire Department can no longer, in good conscience, allow people to live there.”

The latest inspection revealed hazards such as: No water to some suites, sewer waste back up, stolen copper pipes, food and human waste, cockroaches, and ovens being used as a heating source. The Department says about 12 residents will be rehoused to safe, healthy, accommodations.

The Ministry of Social Services has established housing plans and transportation for each resident based on their health care or personal needs.
