There are many great mysteries in life that need to be discussed. This isn’t one of them, but it’s interesting. I’m talking about how Eric Church came up with the “&” in his three-album set, “Heart & Soul”.
He said it was going to be a double album. The “Heart” songs would be on one disc, and the “Soul” tracks on the other. But he also had songs that didn’t fit either, so his producer suggested a third album called ‘And’.
Eric told Rolling Stone how much he hated that idea. Quote, “I said, ‘We can’t have an album called ‘And’. And he goes, ‘What it if it’s Ampersand, just a symbol?’ I said, ‘Who are we, Prince? We’re not doing symbols.'”
Somehow, he changed his mind when the producer spun it this way. Quote, “He said, ‘What if ‘Heart’s’ red, ‘Soul’s’ blue, and ‘Ampersand’s’ purple?’ I went, ‘That’s interesting.’ I could kind of see how that would look.”
By the way, Eric prefers calling the middle disc “And” instead of “Ampersand.” All three albums are out now!
