Saskatchewan Polytechnic and CTS Tek are launching two new courses designed to qualify students as Remotely Piloted Aircraft System or RPAS pilots. The courses will prepare students seeking either Basic or Advanced RPAS pilot certification from Transport Canada.

CTS president Garrett Lawless says, “Commercial and government use of RPAS is experiencing explosive growth.” He says, these devices can revolutionize a broad spectrum of operations that, until recently, could either not be achieved or only be achieved at great expense.”
Lawless says their goal is to establish the best RPAS training group in the world.

Sask Polytech president and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia says, “There have been tremendous advancements in how RPAS pilots are employed, and these advancements are creating many new and exciting opportunities for commercial applications.”

The Basic RPAS course is delivered online, which enables students to complete training at their own pace as they prepare for the Transport Canada Basic RPAS Pilot certification exam. Basic RPAS Pilot certification is required to operate any RPAS that weighs over 250g. Subjects covered include air law, RPAS airframe design, RPAS engine operation, human factors, meteorology, navigation, flight operations, aerodynamics, and radiotelephony.

Advanced RPAS Pilot certification is required to fly any RPAS over persons or in controlled airspace, where the pilot must be able to communicate with Air Traffic Control and effectively comply with their clearances and instructions. The course is intended for those who operate in restricted airspace.

The course requires approximately 24 hours (three days) to complete.
