There has been a bit of late April seeding, but most growers are waiting for warmer soil conditions.
“I suspect by this weekend and next week, most guys will be rolling,” said Matt Struthers, a provincial crops extension specialist in Moose Jaw. “Driving around over the past week, I only counted three separate guys (seeding) south of Moose Jaw.”
Jim Wickett farms in the Rosetown areas and is looking at a Monday start. Of the farmers who have begun seeding, it is mostly barley and a few pulses.
“When I’m at the dealership getting parts, there is a lot of talk about this Monday the fourth going to be the start date for a lot of guys,” Wickett said on April 28. “If we get some warm weather over the weekend, you may see some tractors on the field.”
Growers in all areas of the province are going to be counting on timely rains in May, following a very dry April.
Moisture conditions tend to be a little better across the northern grainbelt where seeding is still several days away.
“On a general basis, probably the start of the May 10th week, depending on weather. There are still some field that have enough water that need a few days to dry out,” Struthers said.
