The federal Liberals continue to sell their budget, recently passed in parliament and that included a boost to Old Age Security. That included the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance taking part Monday in a virtual discussion with seniors from a retirement home in Quebec.
Budget 2021 proposes to increase the Old Age Security (OAS) pension by 10 per cent for seniors 75 and over as of July 2022. It also proposes a one-time payment of $500 in August 2021 to OAS pensioners who will be 75 or over as of June 30, 2022.
And to address the ongoing issues in Canada’s long term care homes, the federal government is offering up $3 billion over five years. Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte says that money will be used to address aging infrastructure, to recruit and train health care workers and to create standards for long term care in consultation with provinces and territories.
