Doug Borrowman of the Prairie Hospice Society, says their organization has been around for eight years and provides hospice services right in their client’s own homes. This is National Hospice Week. He says volunteers are trained and then matched with terminally ill people in Saskatoon, to provide free non-medical support and companionship to the person at the end of life. Volunteers can also provide emotional and bereavement support for families when needed.
Borrowman says during their time in Saskatoon, they’ve helped over 500 people and at any one time they are helping between 80 and 110 people in the city. He adds that 20 percent of their clients have no family in the city to rely upon during a difficult time in the life.
The Prairie Hospice Society operates with no government support and relies solely on fundraising and donors. During the pandemic Borrowman says they have turned to an online 50/50 that is open until May 31st.
