The Alberta Serious Incident Response team will be investigating after a man died, while in custody of the Lloydminster RCMP.
RCMP report responding to a 911 call of a disturbance involving a man believed to be intoxicated and armed with a machete. Upon arrival police report locating a 26 year-old man on the rear deck area of the home with a machete nearby. When two officers attempted to place the man under arrest, they allege a struggle ensued and an additional RCMP officer arrived to provide assistance and bring the man into custody. While in custody at the scene, police report the man exhibited signs of medical distress. First aid was reportedly provided by officers and EMS also attempted to assist, but the man died at the residence.
RCMP report two of the officers needed medical treatment, at hospital, for minor injuries as a result of the incident.
RCMP report the original investigation will remain the responsibility of Lloydminster RCMP while the ASIRT will focus on the conduct of the officers involved, with the full cooperation of the RCMP. The RCMP’s internal review process will also be implemented to fully examine the incident.
