Saskatchewan’s Legislature has become the first Legislative Building in Canada to receive the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification. SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Jim Reiter explains that the certification program measures more than just building codes.

It’s based on the experiences of people with varying disabilities and takes into consideration factors like vehicle access, interior and exterior access and environment, and signage. Buildings have to score above 60 per cent and meet the mandatory requirements to receive the certification.

The Rick Hansen Foundation’s website says in Canada, almost 50 per cent of adults have experienced a permanent or temporary physical disability or live with someone who has.
