Minister of Natural Resources, Seamus O’Regan, says Ottawa has filed a court brief in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, regarding the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline. The brief supports the continued mediation between Enbridge and the State of Michigan, underlines that Line 5 is a critical energy and economic link between Canada and the United States, and conveys Canada’s belief that the U.S. federal court is the proper jurisdiction to hear the case between Michigan and Enbridge.

O’Regan says, “Line 5 is essential to our energy security. The Government of Canada has continuously advocated for and raised the importance of Line 5.” He says the government, has raised Line 5 directly with the U.S. Administration. Ottawa says, under the federal court’s order, Enbridge and Michigan have entered into a mediation process and are meeting regularly.

Saskatchewan’s Minister of Energy and Resources, Bronwyn Eyre says, “The Government of Saskatchewan unequivocally supports the continued operation of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline.” She says, ” Any shutdown of this pipeline would harm Saskatchewan oil producers, workers on both sides of the border, and lead to more environmentally risky transportation of energy products by truck and rail.”
