The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre says its latest play was inspired by Prairie Harm Reduction – an organization that supports people at risk and affected by HIV and Hepatitis, and includes a safe injection site.
Actor April Rogers plays the lead character.
She says Spirit World is based on the true story of Adele Cook from La Ronge, who began life on the trap line, and then later dealt with addictions and contracting HIV, but she ultimately found her strength and healing through her Cree spirituality.
Because of the pandemic, the number of people involved in the production of the play was pared down and most of the rehearsals were online .
Rogers says, “It’s an honour just to be able to even be in theatre while we are going through this pandemic, and still be able to tell a story.”
It was taped at The Refinery and will now be available online for free, both Friday and Saturday night on GTNT’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
