The Liberal government has launched a Canada Greener Homes Grant. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that it will help 700,000 homeowners across the country improve the energy efficiency in their homes and reduce their energy bills.

The investment is $2.6 billion over seven years. The plan is for homeowners to receive grants of up to $5,000 to make energy efficient retrofits to their primary residences and up to $600 to offset the cost of home energy evaluations.

The type of upgrades that would be eligible include replacing windows and doors, adding insulation, sealing air leaks, improving heating and cooling systems or purchasing things like solar panels.

In addition the government is going to recruit and train up to 2,000 new energy advisors to help Canadians make choices about their retrofits.
