Saskatoon Transit has a new mobile ticketing system that kicked off Monday.
Jim McDonald, Director of Transit says the T-GO Saskatoon app will allow people to buy their bus fare right from their phones.
McDonald says this new system is in addition to how people currently pay to ride the bus. Currently people with a bus pass will hold it on top of the fare box and wait for the sound to confirm payment. McDonald says another box has been installed on buses that will do the same thing, but with mobile devices.
McDonald says the company who makes the app is called Masabi, and they have provided the app around the world, including several Canadian cities. McDonald says it’s proven and safe technology that allows payments to happen over phone networks.
McDonald explains that people with discounted or low income passes will still need to come down to the customer service centre, in some cases to set the discount up on their device. McDonald adds all other current farefair payments will continue to be accepted, including cash payments. He states while bus fares will remain the same, a long term fair engagement with the general public is slated to begin in 2022.
