Saskatoon City Council’s Governance and Priorities committee will view a proposal to change the name of John A. Macdonald Road today (Monday).
Tribal Chief Mark Arcand originally made the request back on June 10th, and had suggested the name be changed to Reconciliation Road. However, he also suggested City Council consider the input of residential school survivors when choosing a new name.
Arcand said that renaming the street will lead to healing for many people that have endured pain and suffering as a result of the residential school system.
Councillor David Kirton and Mayor Charlie Clark issued a statement to say they would begin that process during the meeting. John A. Macdonald Road falls within Kirton’s Ward 3.
In the release Mayor Clark said is time to make this change and honour the truths, that Residential School Survivors have shared, about the impacts of these schools through generations.
