The public inquest into the death of 27 year old Steven Rigby has concluded that he died after being shot by police and it was a suicide, commonly referred to as “suicide by cop”.
Rigby died on December 22nd of 2018 on the outskirts of Saskatoon. His mother stated in March of last year that Steven told them he was asked to give up his bed at the Dube Centre for someone in greater need. That was two days before he was shot. Carey Rigby-Wilcox, says her son attempted suicide many times before his death.
The jury had recommendations for the Saskatoon Police Service, the RCMP and the Saskatchewan Health Authority. One of the recommendations to the Police Service is to increase the number of psychologists on staff to assist with critical incidents. A recommendation for both the Police Service and the RCMP is to increase training and resources into a system that patches police radios from both agencies. The jury also recommended the Saskatchewan Health Authority have more centralized health records so doctors can more easily access information about patients.
