A Regina company was fined $350,000 in Weyburn Provincial Court this week after being found guilty of two counts under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations after being charged in connection to a workplace fatality that occurred near Ceylon, Saskatchewan on November 22, 2017. A worker became entangled in a conveyor while clearing the chute of the conveyer system. B L S Asphalt Inc. was found guilty and was fined $125,000 plus a surcharge of $50,000 on each count. One additional charge was dismissed in court.

Meanwhile, also this week, in Estevan provincial court, an Edmonton company pleaded guilty to one count under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Blueforce Logistics Ltd. pleaded guilty to charges stemming form an incident which occurred on January 14, 2019, in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. A worker was seriously injured when sparks from a grinder ignited a fire on the worker’s clothing. The company was fined $46,428.57 plus a surcharge of $18,571.43 for a total of $65,000. One other charge was withdrawn in court.  Employers are required to provide approved protective equipment that is required by the regulations, and they must require their employees to use the equipment.
