Be cautious and be prepared.

That’s the advice of the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s Vice-President of Operations when it comes to emergency situations.
Steve Roberts says it’s the same advice for communities as it is for individuals.  Know the risks, for example for wildfires or floods, and prepare for situations where you may have to stay in place or you may have to evacuate.

Roberts advises having supplies on hand in case road access is cut off and you may have to stay where you are.  Also, if you need to evacuate, know what you need to take, including documentation and key contacts.  Roberts suggests having a point-of-contact outside the emergency area where family members can call or text where they are in case people get separated.

The SPSA announced earlier this week three wildfires were within 20 kilometres of northern communities, but no evacuation orders had been given at that time.  As of Saturday at 11 a.m. there were 64 wildfires, four of which are contained.  So far this year there have been 271 wildfires, in the province, up from the five year average of 205.
