The Leader of the Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the SaskParty government to come up with some real supports for producers and ranchers fighting drought conditions. Ryan Meili says both the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association have requested assistance.
Meili is also calling for a drought support agricultural committee to work with producers and ranchers to support them, and fixing AgriStability, which includes extending the enrolment period and improving payment levels from 70 to 80 per cent. The final request is to develop an alternative to the federal carbon pricing program, reducing costs for producers with rebate programs while incentivizing and recognizing their role as stewards of the land who sequester carbon and protect grasslands and wetlands.
