The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling for the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice for Saskatchewan’s Court of Queen’s Bench.
In a news release, FSIN says Chief Bobby Cameron says a recent news story indicated that Chief Justice Martel Popescul supports the decision to not make public some unsealed documents which aren’t under a publication ban. The documents claim the church provided $25-million worth of in-kind services as part of the national Residential School Survivors Settlement Agreement. These documents, Cameron explains, would identify what these in-kind services were.
Cameron believes choosing not to make these documents public continues to hurt residential school survivors and forces them into another unnecessary and lengthy court process. The FSIN Chief says, “The judicial process he cites to protect these important documents is the same racist systems and laws that upheld and enforced genocide upon our people.”.
