The southern half of the province is under a heat warning from Environment Canada. Daytime highs are expected to continue today in the 30s in the central regions of the province including Meadow Lake, Prince Albert, the Battlefords, Melfort and Tisdale areas, and then further south, the highs will be in the mid 30s. Environment Canada says it’s because of a very warm air mass pushing across the Prairies. It’s expected to continue for a few more days with relief expected by midweek.
It reached 36.8 in Saskatoon on Saturday, which breaks the record of 35.6 set in 1906. Prince Albert’s former record was 31.6 set in 2003, and now sits at 34.2. Swift Current broke its record of 32.9 handily for August 14th. It’s no 36.2. Moose Jaw broke its record of 35 degrees, reaching 36.1 on Saturday. North Battleford’s record to beat was 28.6 set in 2011, but that record has been demolished and 36.6 is now the temperature to beat.
There are also air quality alerts further south with smoke coming from fires in British Columbia. That includes Leader and Gull Lake and moving east to Swift Current, Shaunavon and Moose Jaw. Then, there are also air quality alerts further north, from northern forest fires, and that includes La Ronge, Waskesiu and Pelican Narrows.
