The Prime Minister has visited Governor General Mary Simon to ask her to dissolve parliament, and Justin Trudeau has announced the next federal election will be September 20th.
The Liberal leader says the election is needed, because Canadian citizens need to have a say in this crucial time with the pandemic, the global recession and the global climate crisis. He suggests the decisions made now, will define the lives of Canada’s children and grandchildren. “So in this pivotal, consequential moment, who wouldn’t want a say? Who wouldn’t want their chance to help decide where our country goes from here. Canadians need to choose how we finish the fight against COVID-19 and build back better.”
Political enthusiasts are saying the Liberal party is hoping the leadership shown during the pandemic and the support programs will outweigh the ethical issues, such as the WE charity controversy.
Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole says the country is just coming through a very difficult time and we are finally at the point where we can see friends and family, and shouldn’t be risking the safety of Canadians by calling an election for political gain.
The Liberal party has 155 seats right now, followed by the Conservatives with 119, the Bloc Quebecois with 32, the NDP with 24, plus five Independent seats in Parliament and one seat is vacant.
