Crimes in downtown Saskatoon are on the decline in 2021, compared to last year.
That’s according to the Saskatoon Police Service mid-year update on its business plan, which was presented to the Board of Police Commissioners.
So far, crime incidents in the downtown area are down 14 per cent compared to the first half of last year, and almost 29 per cent from the five year average.
Core neighbourhood crime is down by just under 18 per cent over last year and just under 23 per cent compared to the five year average.
Not all crimes are on the decline, though.
Crimes against a person have increased by 3.6 per cent over 2020 and 4.5 per cent for the five year average.
The report to the Board of Police Commissioners also states that the pandemic has limited the amount of engagement the Police Service has been able to host or attend during the year.
Typically, there would be engagement with multi-cultural communities, seniors, Indigenous communities and youth.
Some of the engagement has been done online and some has been deferred to a future date.
