A Regina Police officer fatally shot a dog on Wednesday night to protect the public. The Police Service says around 8:30 officers were dispatched to a report of a woman who was behaving strangely, whose dog, a medium-sized brown pitbull on a leash, had attacked another dog and was behaving aggressively by barking, growling and lunging at people.
Police requested a threat assessment from an Animal Protection Officer, who decided the dog should be seized because of its aggressiveness. It’s alleged the woman then took the dog’s leash off and it lunched at the APO, prompting an officer to step toward the dog to distract it. The dog charged at the officer, who then fired at the pitbull, fatally wounding it.
The Regina Police Service says there will be more investigation into this incident to determine the chain of events that led to this unfortunate outcome.
