There will be a public inquest into the death of Samwel Uko and it will be held on September 20-24, at the Ramada Plaza in Regina.
The 20 year old man was seen entering into Wascana Lake in Regina and submerging under the water on May 21, 2020. Witnesses called 911 and searchers located Mr. Uko deceased in the lake later that day. He had visited the emergency room at the Regina General Hospital twice on the day he died.
The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
Coroner Robert Kennedy, Q.C. will preside at the inquest. Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person. The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Subsequent start times will be determined by the presiding coroner.
