Melfort RCMP say they arrested Shawn Moostoos at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon at a home in Melfort. A manhunt had been underway since Sunday night for the 33 year old man wanted in connection to a shooting around 7 p.m. that night on the James Smith Cree Nation.
A 37 year-old man and a 28 year-old woman from the James Smith Cree Nation were declared deceased following the shooting at a home on the First Nation. A 44 year-old man was taken to hospital by local EMS with serious, but not-life threatening injuries. Police say the suspect and victims were known to each other. Police say they are not seeking any additional suspects in connection to the incident.
The SaskAlert system was used and a Critical Alert was issued advising the public not to answer doors, stay away from windows, and if they saw the suspect to call 911 while sheltering in place. Melfort RCMP urged residents in the area not to pick up hitchhikers and beware of anyone asking for a ride.
Police Still Searching for Suspect
Officers from multiple Saskatchewan RCMP detachments were involved in the search including assistance from Saskatoon Police Service Air 1, STARS Air Ambulance, surrounding RCMP Detachments and Police Dog Services. James Smith Cree Nation is about 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert.
