The provincial New Democrats believe immediate action is needed to kickstart the stalled vaccination rates. Leader Ryan Meili is also urging the Sask Party government to implement vaccine requirements for all health, Crown corporation, government and public agency employees in the province.
He believes Premier Scott Moe needs to take his own advice. The Premier has stated that employers have the right to impose vaccine requirements for their employees, and Meili suggests that’s what needs to be done for employees under the provincial umbrella.
The government employs more than 11,000 people. The Saskatchewan Health Authority employs more than 36,000 and the Crown sector directly employs more than 10,000 people. Meili says there are hundreds more who work for smaller government agencies like the Legal Aid Commission, the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Provincial Capital Commission.
He notes that Saskatchewan has the lowest rate of vaccinations in the country and the highest rate of new COVID-19 cases.
