With one week to go before Election Day, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation would like to see party leaders stop avoiding three key issues for taxpayers. The CTF’s Federal Director, Franco Terrazzano says the CTF is looking to hear from leaders on where they’re going to save money when it comes to the budget, are they going to reverse the pay raises that Members of Parliament received during the pandemic. Terrazzano says all MPs received two pay raises during the pandemic ranging from $6,900 for a backbench Member of Parliament to $13,800 for the Prime Minister. The third issue the CTF would like to see leaders comment on is paying back the wage subsidies that parties utilized during the pandemic. The CTF Federal Director says the Conservatives promised to repay the federal wage subsidy, but as of March, the party hadn’t paid it back. In 2020, the Liberals said they would stop using the subsidy, but had no plans to repay it. As for the NDP, they haven’t said if they’ve paid back the subsidy. “The feds were spending all-time highs before the pandemic, so it shouldn’t be too hard for politicians to save taxpayers some money.” says Terrazzano. Election Day is a week from today (mon) on Sept. 20th.
