The University of Saskatchewan is going to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a series of events designed to raise awareness while acknowledging the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools.
This evening at 7 p.m. you will see orange lights on the Saskatoon Campus. The event will also be live-streamed with remarks from USask President Peter Stoicheff and Elders Florence Highway and Evelyn Linklater. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is September 30th which is also known as Orange Shirt Day in Canada, first recognized in 2013.
The orange shirt recognizes residential school survivors and is based on the story of Phyllis Webstad who entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. with a brand new orange shirt for her first day of school which she was stripped of and then dressed in the school’s uniform.
In addition to the orange lights being turned on tonight, throughout the week, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action will be projected onto the Peter McKinnon Building, Thorvaldson Building, and the Murray Library Building on the Saskatoon campus.
