Around 60 people showed up for a vigil Friday evening put on by the newly formed group known as ‘Concerned Citizens for COVID Action’. The event was held in front of Health Minister, Paul Merriman’s office. The group met to put pressure on the provincial government to implement more serious measures to combat the fourth wave of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan. Group spokesperson Theresa MacKinnon says they would like to see the province limit capacity in businesses and stores along with bringing back household bubbles, similar to the health orders that were in place earlier this year and late 2020. In addition, the group is calling for the health authority and government officials to release modeling data for cases of COVID-19 and to mandate vaccinations for all professions that serve the public and not just government workers. The group is also looking for the province to enhance contact tracing efforts and isolation practices for kids attending school. The province did change the public health order on Thursday stating that any unvaccinated child attending school and is exposed to COVID at home would have to self-isolate. Previously, the government said students who were identified as a close contact to someone who tested positive for the virus was still allowed to keep going to school. MacKinnon says they as a group are sad to see numbers like the ones seen Thursday that saw over 600 new cases and 10 COVID-19 related fatalities. “We’re sad, we’re disappointed, we’re frustrated, because when these measures were lifted on July 11th, it allowed the Delta virus to transmit.” When asked what her message would be to Health Minister, Paul Merriman, MacKinnon says said “Step up to the plate Paul Merriman, your job is health minister, you took an oath to serve the citizens of this province. We have not heard from you until this past week for almost entire month. This is unacceptable. A number of the 60 some people in attendance held various signs saying “Sask Party Death bar Over 700 Served” and “Save Health Care”. Several NDP members were in attendance including Leader Ryan Meili and his family.
