To the outside observer, the story was that Brandon defenceman Chad Nychuk’s second goal of the night was the game-winner at 2:22 of overtime, giving the Wheat Kings a 5-4 victory over the Saskatoon Blades.
But, for the large majority of 2,298 fans inside SaskTel Centre, the story was that the Bridge City Bunch got hosed by a lengthy video review of a coaches’ challenge for offside that didn’t change the call on the ice that led to a key Wheaties’ goal. With the score tied 1-1 and Brandon on a power play, the visitors took the lead on a Ben Thornton goal. But, first-year Blue and Gold head coach Brennan Sonne was informed by video coach Karter Parisloff that the play was offside at the Saskatoon blue-line. An ensuing challenge led to an over 10-minute delay, during which the jumbotron on the centre ice scoreboard showed the Wheat Kings were, indeed, offside. But, the challenge was denied with word later coming that the video feed on the jumbotron wasn’t able to be seen by the video officials because of a malfunction of their equipment. The Wheaties never trailed after that as they evened their season record at 3-3-0. The 2-1-1 Blades did get a point in the standings when Brandon Lisowsky banged in the rebound of a Tristen Robins’ shot with 48.8 seconds left in the third period to force extra time. Lisowsky ended up with two goals and an assist, Robins had a goal and two helpers with 16-year-old rookie Tyler Parr scoring his first W-H-L goal on a second period man advantage. The Bridge City Bunch out-shot Brandon 35-24, but were 1-for-7 on the power play and gave up a short-handed tally for the second time in the young season. The Blue and Gold return to action Friday when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 o’clock at SaskTel Centre. The broadcast on CJWW begins at 6:30. Following is Les Lazaruk’s post-game show interview with Blades’ head coach Brennan Sonne, as well as the game summary courtesy the W-H-L…..
