The City of Saskatoon’s Governance and Priorities Committee will hear today (Mon) about two options for a utility rate for curbside residential garbage and the upcoming curbside residential organics program.
Option one is implementing fixed monthly rates in January of 2023 for both black cart garbage and curbside organics.
Option two, which Administration recommends, is a fixed monthly rate for curbside organics to begin in January of 2023 and variable rates for black cart garbage as of 2024.
General Manager of Utilities and Environment, Angela Gardiner, says, ‘Funding these services through a utility is a step in the right direction, as it provides additional transparency of program costs and accountability to customers through a fair and justifiable rate.”
The City says option two is considered most favourable because it increases the customer’s control over their costs and encourages lower usage of residential garbage services by monetizing how garbage households generate.
