RCMP say their members in west-central and northwest Saskatchewan have been recently responding to numerous calls of individuals in medical distress which they suspect is related to the use of illicit street drugs. The RCMP says some of the incidents have been fatal.
They are reminding those who use illicit drugs or have loved ones who do, to be aware that street drugs can contain other substances the user isn’t aware of and residents can get a “take home naloxone” kit free at many locations in the province which can temporarily reverse overdose effects. You can also buy it at some pharmacies in Saskatchewan.
As well, the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act does provide legal protection for those seeking emergency help during an overdose so don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1.
Signs of an overdose include: slow, weak or no breathing; blue lips or nails; dizziness and confusion; choking, gurgling or snoring sounds; drowsiness or inability to be woken up.
